6th November 2010 – Rock and Road Selection

Official selection for the Rock and Road closed this Monday 01 November, so it’s time to release the names of selected participants!  Selection is based on top 8a.nu scores for each province plus three of the next best scores overall for both guys and girls.  This year we’ve mixed it up a bit as we’ve included 6 extra competitors selected on the basis of nominations by either themselves or people who think they’ve got what it takes.

The Rock  and Road committee is in the process of contacting all selected competitors so there will be some surprises to come, depending on which competitors are available for this time period.  The final list will be published in the coming week.

We want to thank all those that put in effort either to make the cut or put in a nomination.  Well done to all those selected!  For those that don’t see their names on the list – hold your horses as the list is in the process of confirmation.

Judging by the PSYCHE this is going to be a super fun time – an exhibition of some of the finest talent this country has – including the legends, the stalwarts as well as the young-guns.  We would love to see as many people present to support the competitors throughout the 10 day competition – feel free to get hold of us for more details.

11 October 2010

There are just 3 weeks left for climbers to post their scores on 8a.nu or to make nominations for the Rock and Road trip. Of course in that time more scores will be posted, rankings will rise and tumble, but here’s a look at who is making the grade on this Monday morning…

We have also received several nominations from strong, deserving and motivated climbers from around the country, from the bouldering and trad fraternities and from the up-and-coming youth…

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone, competitors and followers in December!

About the Rock and Road

The Rock and Road is an organised and sponsored road-trip for the strongest and the up-and-coming climbers in South Africa. Started in Gauteng in 2007, the event has taken each year’s top climbers to KZN and the Eastern Cape, finally it is the Western Cape’s turn!

The motivation for the event is to get top climbers together once every 18 months to collectively try some of the hardest and newest routes in a particular province. More particularly, it’s an incentive for training, consistent sending around the year, to give the up-and-coming climbers a launch into the top climbing arena, and to generate some extra psych that everyone can take back to their home crags. Most of all, to have a whole lot of fun!

While the organisation is centered around the selected competitors, its a public event and anyone is welcome and encouraged to join in for part of or the whole event on a DIY basis.

Here’s a rough line-up that competitors, spectators, friends and family can expect of this year’s event:

December 10th – 18th 2010

Friday evening
10th December
Meet and greet – slideshow by AdK – MCSA Clubhouse
Saturday
11th December
Bouldering day at a new and exciting area on the South Peninsula

Beach party at Kalk Bay

Sunday

challenges high above the city – bring an extra can of brave!

Beach party /spit-braai at Camps Bay

Monday
13th December
Youth/mentor day: Rock-rally style competition at Silvermine for youth climbers. Each youth to be paired with a Rock-and-Roader who will strategise and coach their charge
Tuesday & Wednesday
14 & 15th December
Redpoint round in Montagu and surrounds. High points for many of the forgotten hard test-pieces
Thursday
16th December
Rest day. Book-reading by the river, wine-tasting, beaches
Friday & Saturday
17th & 18th December
Semi-finals and finals at Oudtshoorn. The sight of much development in the last 12 months, Oudtshoorn has at least seven brand new hard lines from 27 – 32 (and counting!)

Extended red-point hour!

So who are the players?

Climbers log their scores on the website www.8a.nu. This has a scoring and ranking system

  • Each of the major provinces (WC, GP, KZN) can send their 3 best men and 2 best women
  • There are 2 places for men and 2 for women from ‘other’ provinces
  • There are places for the next best 3 male climbers and 3 women climbers from any province
  • There are 4 places available by nomination, for boulderers, trad-climbers, developers, developing climbers, youth etc. These should be people who will add to the event or be able to make best use of the event and take the event back to their home crags/disciplines afterwards

NB: As above, the event is centered around the competitors, but we’d totally love for many others to join in for part of or the whole event on a DIY basis!
