Climbers 4 Waterval Boven Ropes in Bags of Support

60 litres of paint, a computer and printer, two oil heaters and bags of clothes…just some of the ‘jumble’ generously donated by climbers at the 2010 Roc Rally in support of Climbers 4 Waterval Boven, an initiative by climbers to support the Waterval Boven community.

The first project of Climbers 4 Waterval Boven is a Jumble Sale to help raise money for Ebhudlweni Primary, the local township school.  In addition to using donations like the paint and computer, the school will also benefit from the sale of all jumble; the school’s 850 learners will be involved in tagging and pricing all jumble donated, and for advertising the jumble sale – so learning some valuable commercial skills.

The school’s principal has pledged accurate record keeping and detailed reporting, and invites all climbers to visit the school (see attached letter).

So next time you come to Boven to enjoy the fantastic climbing in the area, pack in those clothes you don’t wear, or appliances gathering dust and help make a difference!

All donations can be dropped off at Claire and Danny’s house by the end of October – 44 Fourth Avenue (the same road as the climbers lodge, but on the other side of the road leading up to Tranquilitas – just behind the post office).

Below is a letter from the Ebhudlweni School

—————————————————————————————————————————–

Guys,

It’s time for all of us who love and get such pleasure out of Climbing at Boven, to give something back to the underprivileged township community living there.

This isn’t about once off handouts!!! It’s about trying to put sustainable projects in place that:

A.) Uplift the community
B.) Are branded as climber initiatives

We hope that by so doing we will foster closer relations with our neighbours and elevate the perception of “rock climbing” to being a positive contribution to the community and therefore an activity that township residence start to appreciate and value (this may include but is not limited to the clobbering of Tsotsis who mug climbers)

So how can you contribute? PROJECT NUMBER ONE: JUMBLE SALE to help raise money for the local school. Check out the our page on Facebook

It’s not optional: next trip to Boven (Rock Rally, before or after) pack in those clothes, appliances etc that you ain’t ever going to wear / use and lets make a difference!!!

Clair and Danny have kindly offered there house as a temporary, safe holding facility before the goods get transferred to the school. And it’s a great project. The kids get to tag and price the items and then run the sale thereby learning some practical commercial skills.

Guys – that township is a mess and people are living in abject poverty whilst around the corner, we are trying to figure out crux sequences on a rock face. Does that seem sustainable in the New SA???

Please let all your climbing buddies know about this initiative.
