Climbers summit Kili barefoot

Five South Africans summited Mount Kilimanjaro barefoot to raise funds for the Children’s Hospital Trust, which fundraises for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town.

At 13h45 on the 28th of January the Old Mutual Barefoot Kilimanjaro Team summited and stood barefoot on the top of Africa.  After setting off this morning in sub-zero temperatures, the team realised that they would all be challenged.  It was a day that would make any previous day look very ordinary.  The gradient and loose volcanic scree continued relentlessly for 4 and a half hours from Kibo Huts (4700m) to Gilman’s point (5681).

    Did these guys really do the whole final day barefoot? I would imagine 6 hours in negative degrees would cause a little frostbite??
