Simon’s Town fire ‘far from under control’

Fire fighters spent last night monitoring a vegetation fire that raged out of control high up on the mountain above Simon’s Town.

Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) fire and technical services manager Philip Prins said the fire was reported shortly after 8pm and that it had started on private land above Miller’s Point.

“The wind is very strong, between 50 and 60km/h. The fire spread very quickly and moved over the ridge of the mountain towards Plato Road, which goes to Cape Point. It is far from being under control. The wind is just too strong for us to send people up there. We’ll be monitoring the situation throughout the night,” Prins said. He said a combined crew of 30 TMNP firefighters and Wildfire Service volunteers had been deployed.
