The Rock Climbing Wall in Durban Closed Down

One of Durban’s oldest climbing walls ‘The Rock’ has closed down.  The X shaped wall used to stand 22,5 metres tall, had 30+ top rope and lead routes.

The Gateway Theatre of Shopping announced that The Rock will be demolished during October 2013.

When The Rock first opened it was a great draw card for the mall. The number of people interested in The Rock has declined over the years. The wall no longer attracts as many people as it used to,” says Akash Maharaj, Centre Manager at Gateway.

The demolition of The Rock is all part of Gateway’s strategy to upgrade the Expo Xplore area of the mall and to make it more appealing. “It is our aim to keep the centre relevant for our shoppers. We believe that this change will be favourable for our shoppers and tenants,” adds Maharaj.

Shoppers and tenants will not be affected during the demolition of The Rock.  Gateway’s shoppers can definitely look forward to something more exciting in the future.

Sad news but to be expected, they never allowed any selling of climbing equipment to supplement the feature so it was relegated to become a wall for small kids whilst their parents shopped.

The centre always charged rediculous rates and wouldn’t let visiting climbers use it at a reduced rate while there so no wonder it never got used. Sad
