MCSA CT Section Rock Climbing Committee January 2014 Newsletter

Mountain Club of South Africa logoHi Climbing Community,

Please see the below latest news that the MCSA Rock Climbing Committee is working on and please don’t hesitate to contact us with any suggestions, information or offers to assist us with any of the below items.

Bouldering EMP

The Rock Climbing Committee is still in the process of finalizing the draft EMP and will distribute it to the climbing community for comments.
A reminder to keep the permit letter on you at all times.  The letter can be found here.

Anchor Replacement FundARF and Rebolting

The next rebolting meet will be taking place at Kalk Bay crags on 22nd March.  Please contact Cormac Tooze on or Cuan Lohrentz on for more information and to assist.

The Rock Climbing Committee will be working on an update of the bolting application form and procedures across the Peninsula and for the Cederberg.  This application and bolting policy will be distributed amongst the climbing community once finalized as well as be available from the MCSA.

Boschkloof Crag

The MCSA is working on re-opening Boschkloof crag but please be aware that this is a slow and delicate project.  We kindly ask that all climbers continue to respect the no-go zone at this crag.

Black Shadow Access

We are still waiting for confirmation from the South African National Heritage Council that this boulder will be categorized as historical rock art.  Please continue to observe the closure of Tea Garden as we are currently in negotiations with the landowner to open the other bouldering sites for the season.

Rocklands State

The Rock Climbing Committee held a meeting with CapeNature and the Private Landowners in mid-January and the following items were discussed:

  • One permit for all of Rocklands
  • An Online Permit System
  • The use of the Wild Card for discounts on fees and/or accommodation
  • Education Programs for our International Climbers, including a Conservation Day at the end of May, a mid-season Clean Up at the end of July, signage, information pamphlets and other such informational instruments.
  • The rehabilitation of Roadside

We are waiting for CapeNature to hold their internal meeting and will provide feedback once we receive it from them.
