Results from the Rumble 1

Since Southern Rock opened its doors to the public, the Rumble has become an integral part of its calendar.  In our first year we opted to have 1 comp per quarter.  But this year we got wise to the public’s wants and needs.  Word on the street was that people wanted more.  By the end of last year, during the quiet season (at least competition-wise) I was being plagued by questions of “when is the next Rumble?”  It seemed that our local climbing community had grabbed onto Rumble as not only a fun and social night out, smack talking your friends while you flexed for the ladies (or guys)  but also a reason to train, something to aim for.  So it was not surprising when the peeps were excited to shake off the holiday flab and sink their claws into the first comp of the season.  This year we have opted to have 6 comps – neatly spaced out in 2 month gaps so that there is always something to look forward to.

Rumble 1 report
What made it more exciting was the psyche from our head route setter.  Mikey had just returned from 7 wks in the UK. Taking advantage of a visit to see his brother, he made the most of his time there and sampled the UK routes.  He came back with not only a lack of tan (which he quickly remedied on a hot day in Kloof) and the book of Power but also a head full of ideas on what evil *cough* I mean fun routes he wanted to set for the upcoming comps.

The locals were impressed by the effort visiting foreigner, Andrea Biffi, made to come and compete.  Flying in all the way from Montagu just for the day, he made the final leg of the journey on foot…..in the rain.  I’m not making this up.  Andrea then made short work of the routes, flashing all of them while the rest of us were still trying to warm up.

Rumble 1 report

The problems were creative and interesting.  Competitors had to make effective use of heel hooks to conquer some of them while others required a delicate mantel.  One particular problem was left standing till the end of the night with climbers not wanting to make eye contact with it.  It was entertaining watching their eyes widen as they realised what needed to be done.  A standing start with your back to the corner needed a committed leap of destiny to the hold on the side of the wave.  Dramatic swinging of legs and flexed guns meant that this route soon attracted all the competitors’ attention.

A very big thank you goes to our two hard working route setters, Michael van der Ham and Dylan Williams who worked tirelessly to produce quality routes.  Watch this spot for their video of the event coming soon.  See you at the next comp on 6th March.
