It was a brilliantly hot day when the Montagu Mayhem Rock Rally took place this year. Over 50 climbers took part and we even had some visitors from up country competing. Despite the sweltering 36 degrees Celsius, climbers would not be put off and pushed themselves to get their ten best routes of the day. Their will and drive may very well have been contributed to by Jetboil’s free coffee, tea and hot chocolate early on Saturday morning. Many a climber came trundling in on a reasonably chilly Saturday morning to receive their complimentary warm beverage from the RAM Mountaineering crew manning the Jetboil station.
As always, there are those grand occurrences that take place during the day that lend themselves to some unique and somewhat elaborate spot-prizes. Nadia Thorn fell seven times on Gospel Express; Clifford Hakimi took one for the team when Gosia accidentally dislodged a decent-sized rock off of Eddie of Bovidence and Clifford’s shoulder bore the brunt of it; Andrea Biffi took a whopper of a fall off Hypoxia and nearly took out his belayer, Mikela Sinovich; Milliza le Grange went flying up the rock face when her boyfriend and climber she was belaying, Alan Hills, took an equally significant fall. It really is all in a day’s climb for these athletes but some of them did it in complete style and funk with the fancy dress part of the day. Wayne’s World were “Partying on”; The Karate Kids were doing Ninja moves up some classic routes; The Rocky Horror Picture Show sparkled at Legoland and showed a bit of leg in fishneck stockings and The Human Rock Climbing Walls added some colourful grips to the equation.
The stage was set with sponsors’ Black Diamond, Boreal, Beal, Five Ten, The Mountain Club of South Africa, City Rock and Mountain Mail Order and Buff banners adding prominence to the event. Climbers arrived at De Bos Quad in dribs and drabs with their scoresheets and proceeded to be fed well by Cheeky Little Caterers’ monumental potjie-kos and delicious dessert. Once all climbers were fed and rested, the prize-giving ensued. Although each category winner well and truly deserved their prizes (the scores speak for themselves), it was the spot-prizes that got the most laughs and cheers. After a fairly relaxed after-party, climbers dwindled off to crash for the night in their tents and around campfires.
Sunday dawned with the promise of another sweltering day and about twenty climbers took part in the free Yoga Session given by Alta Lourette, a Yoga Instructor from City Rock and sponsored by Lorna Jane. All those aching muscles from the previous day’s hard climbing received some decent love and attention before heading off to Waterworld Crag to take part in the Climber Responsibility Day and help restore and dam part of the base of the crag which has seen significant water pooling there after the heavy floods.
Those climbers who didn’t take advantage of the shady crags that Sunday afternoon, headed off to Supertubes to watch Aerial Silks Artist, Tasja Reckhaus, give a mesmerising Aerial Silks Performance.
It was one of the best weekends and we have many people and companies to thank for their contributions:
