Hiker dies on Lion’s Head

The body of a hiker has been recovered after he fell to his death on Lion’s Head on Sunday afternoon.

“We responded to a call just after 4pm,” said SA National Parks regional spokeswoman Merle Collins. “We found a body of an unknown man who had fallen about 100m on Lion’s Head. At this stage it is unclear what happened.”

The man, who has not been identified, was found on the side of the mountain, she said.

Table Mountain Watch spokesman Andre van Schalkwyk said the rescue team included Wilderness Search and Rescue personnel and EMS crew.

The recovery was completed after 9pm, he said. “It was quite a technical operation. It was above the kramat (Muslim shrine). He fell very far down. About three-quarters of the way. We had to lower him down and so it was very technical. I have no idea what happened.”

Police spokesman Tembinkosi Kinana said: “An unknown man aged about 25 died. The police got a call at about 4.30pm. The man fell and sustained head injuries. An inquest docket has been opened.”

EMS provincial spokesman Robert Daniels confirmed the incident, but said there were no details yet.
