Rhodes Memorial Area – For Students especially

Please note  (distributed by Media Liaison and Communications for UCT):

The South African Police Service (SAPS) and the University of Cape Town’s Campus Protection Services have for the last week (or two) worked together to try to piece together the circumstances around an off-campus incident in which a female UCT student reported that she was robbed and assaulted at the Rhodes Memorial building above Upper Campus. The student alerted the SAPS to the incident and has been receiving medical assistance and counselling support.

The incident occurred when she was walking at 23h00 in the area of Rhodes Memorial. SAPS officers are investigating the area and are seeking to arrest the attacker.

We are writing to alert students and staff to the incident and to warn you in particular about the area around Rhodes Memorial. Various incidents have occurred there over the last few months involving cyclists, walkers and other visitors. We advise students and staff to avoid the area, particularly after dark. It is a popular viewing point for tourists in the day, but it is not advisable to be there after dark.

While we should all, men and women alike, have the right to walk safely wherever we want and at any time, the reality of the situation is that isolated areas after dark are targeted by criminals and should be avoided.

Please review and follow the safety and security checklist on the UCT website. If you see anybody who looks suspicious on campus, please alert a security office immediately. If you need assistance, you can call Campus Protection Services on 021 650 2222/3. We recommend you store this number on your speed dial.

Sincerely

“I was just walking by myself late at night in a quiet, secluded area…”

I hate to be cynical about this, but I wonder what the chances of the student being foreign is?

Not that that says much… My boss was attacked and mugged in Main Road (not far from Baxter) in the middle of the day.
