2014 Drakensberg Ice Climbing

2014 was a below average year for Ice in the Drakensberg and ice climbing fanatics had to work harder than usual (this is Africa after all) to get their fix in South Africa and Lesotho. Here is a compilation of my two ice climbing trips.

@Jay – are you referring to me or one of the guys in the video? – I don’t think we have had the opportunity to share a ride? Pop me a mail on vdm.dean at gmail.com

@Mario – if you have any alpine aspirations I can only suggest that you get your feet wet (cold?) during the local winter season. There are such magnificent alpine destinations abroad (Peru being my favorite more or less affordable one) and this will help set you up for it. Several local climbers have made the mistake of not making sure that they learn as much as possible locally during our short winters and then end up paying big, big bucks for lessons which they could easily have learnt by doing some winter hiking, snow and ice climbing in the ‘Berg and getting familiar with gear and the practicalities of winter mountaineering at a more affordable budget (e.g. by joining a MCSA winter meet). Not having experience also means that one has to lower one’s climbing objectives abroad because of insufficient experience to tag along on the more ‘interesting’ trekking peaks and destinations – if you plan to do something interesting make sure you get good bang for your buck by using all the local opportunities to the fullest. Even if you don’t have alpine aspirations it is still worthwhile to add this as something to make you a more rounded mountaineer. Good luck, it is great fun and you are welcome to pop me a mail

Thank you for the info Dean!

I’ve been invited to go ice climb with Tristan in the berg but my time is being taken up by my 1 year old daughter! :)

    Not that I mind btw!

Definitely in my 5 year plan!

    I will definitely PM you

    Cheers
