Sasha DiGiulian Ascent on Viaje de los Locos

Rained off of her intended Summer project ‘Zahir Plus’ in Switzerland, Sasha DiGiulian and her climbing partner Edu Marin relocated their mission to the Italian island of and the seven pitch ‘Viaje de los Locos’ (8b+/5.14a).  Literally translated as ‘The Madmen’s Journey,’ the route was established by Spanish climber Dani Andrada but had not seen an ascent since 2002. When they arrived, Edu and Sasha found that the route had been largely forgotten, with no in situ quickdraws and not even any chalk to hint at the correct path. Unconvinced she could manage the route, which features a number of reach dependant crux moves, Sasha set about working the line, with success less than certain. A frustrating period followed with Sasha making little progress on the route. However, as their time in the country ticked down, a breakthrough finally came with Sasha climbing through the crux of the 5.14 pitch. On the final day before she was due to return stateside, Sasha climbed the entire route, completing a mammoth journey and rounding out a Summer in which little else had gone to plan.
