Two of South Africa’s most extreme sports photographers were shortlisted for the Red Bull Illume photographic competition with one of them snatching the title in the ‘Wings’ category at the awards ceremony in Chicago recently.
This could only have been the result of pure photographic talent, passion for the outdoors and split-second timing, as photographs taken by Micky Wiswedel and Kelvin Trautman were selected from approximately 5 645 worldwide entries from 120 countries.
The overall winner, as well as the 11 category winners, were announced and the images unveiled as part of the Red Bull Illume Exhibit Tour, with the competition rated one of the world’s best action and adventure sports photography titles.
Wiswedel won the ‘Wings’ category for his photograph of climber Jamie Smith, mid-fall as he attempts a new route on Table Mountain, Cape Town. He says, “I can’t believe I won my category when there were such epic shots in the competition. I’m still buzzing like crazy, it all seems a little unreal.”
