Climbing Wall Design Competition – R10 000 prize!

Our new Paarden Eiland gym construction is coming along very nicely. All the climbing structures are built, most of the plywood is on. We are already starting to drill those 50,000 t-nut holes. So far we are on track for a December 1 opening. Undoubtedly we will have the best climbing and bouldering terrain in SA when we open – 3,000 m2 of high climbing, 600 m2 of bouldering, and 400m2 for the up-and-coming ‘Alex Megoses’.

The last step in terms of the climbing wall construction is to paint the plywood.

Our men know how to handle their tools!

That’s where you all come into the picture.

So we decided to run a competition!
It makes sense to finish it all off with a really cool, vibrant, alive color design. Not too busy, not too simple.

Submit YOUR design for our climbing wall colors!

Here is how:

You will need to download sketchup, a 3D modelling program. It is free for 60 days. Then ‘open’ our design file:

Then open our wall design file and modify it according to your design:

If you don’t know how to use sketchup – here is a tutorial:
or take a look at our own tutorials:

Modify the colors, Solid colors only please, 8 maximum.
No patterns or graffiti designs please. They don’t work with grips on the wall.

Save your design as “CityROCK Paarden Eiland Model_Name Surname” or “CR_Name Surname” and send it back to

First prize: A R10,000 CityROCK Gear Shop gift voucher. Second prize: One year membership for the new CityROCK Paarden Eiland gym. Every serious submission gets a free day pass for when we open!

Closing date: Midnight, Sunday August 20, 2017. Yes, we are on a tight schedule here.

The fine print:

First prize: a voucher for R10,000 from the CityROCK Gear Shop/Mountain Mail Order.  No other discounts are applicable. If we choose your design as is, you win the jackpot. If we alter it slightly, ditto.
If we choose your bouldering design OR your high climbing design, you get half. We will try to be fair and generous here.
Runner-up prize: One year free membership for the new Paarden Eiland gym, value approx. R6,000.
* Every serious entry will get a free day pass.
* The jury consists of Robert Breyer and Patricia Rista.
* CityROCK staff, our suppliers – everyone can enter.
* It would be nice if the design fits in with the overall look and feel of the building. Yes, we had a professional (climber) architect work with us.
Our color pallet consists of many white walls, red painted or bagged red brick  walls, grey steel trusses and columns everywhere, plenty of varnished plywood, black steel highlights (doors, balustrades).
Multiple submissions are not accepted.
The jury’s decision will of course be final.

Wow this is an awesome opportunity to be part of the new gym!. Seeing JHB might just be a bit of a giveaway on what Mr Judge likes.

Going through the tutorials now to learn sketchup, the new link works better than the first one, thanks for that.

Looking forward to seeing my design on the walls and getting a new rack

Great idea! Always nice when the people who use the facilities get a say in the design and ontop of that I also had a lot of fun.
    Can’t wait till December!!

Will you eccept Paint Drawings mos, mr Breyer?

    • Robert Breyer Aug 18, 2017 at 11:40 am #

Mr Jacques – don’t see how you can do this in Paint. There are many planes to color in on the model. Sketchup is really easy to use. Send me a sample and I will let you know.
