CityROCK Johannesburg celebrated their 4th birthday on Saturday with CityROCKtober climbing festival. From the qualification rounds, through to the final boulders, climbers and spectators rocked to some Treepian beats (only the best DJ in JHB!). Who won you ask? Everyone who was there!
The Fussy Vegan outdid themselves with plant-based sustenance for the crowd. Cally Bishop blew out the candles on the mushroom boulder cake made by Angela Eckhardt. With a good spread of tops and attempts the route setters seem to have the recipe right! Jumar, dyno and table boulder challenges kept everyone’s psyche going.
The final showdown of lead saw Chris Cosser being crowned champion. In the ladies division, Erin Sterkenberg showed us her on-sight skills to get the top lead spot.
And the boulders? They crushed them! Camilla Cibulka flexed her way to first position. On the testosterone driven side, shirts were whipped off as the crowd cheered James Barnes to the top boulder podium.
But that’s not all! This celebration was for EVERYONE and the top rope tough guys showed us how best to have fun. Wesley Rothwell won the men’s category after an exciting super final. The ladies top rope was won by none other than 13 year old Emma Williamson.
Did you miss out this time? #saynotofomo and be at the next big thing – the Reel Rock film tour. Showcasing the best of climbing’s cinematography, Reel Rock will be screened at CityROCK Johannesberg and CityROCK Cape Town on 1 November 2019. Keep an eye on social media for tickets.
