Phlip Oliver sent Up For Grabs on the 11th of April, we caught up with him for a brief interview:

Soloing routes came as a natural progression for me. I was staying on a farm in Montagu and I didn’t always have a climbing partner. I would cycle my bike to the crags and climb routes alone, soaking up the sun and moving free.

My father & I have about 50 sport projects. I give him my easy ones & take his hard ones. I’m keen to open my routes at Oudtshoorn & repeat Short Circuit (31).

As far as climbing goes, I’d really love to do hard traditional onsights and ground up ascents of big wall routes. Sport climbing is fantastic but a little limiting in some ways. Trad just seems to offer climbers the freedom to pick a line and head for the skyline. That appeals to me on a very deep level.

It feels incredible to be climbing again, and to be feeling strong and getting on harder routes is really fantastic. The attraction of a hard route is not the grade but the challenge, where the moves require more finesse and flow which I really love.

Rodan is the arch-enemy of Godzilla (a monster) in the 1950’s Japanese movies and the name of the climb to the right of Rodan (8b). In all the films its just people screaming and running from giant plasticine monsters, classic stuff.

Dylan is a breath of fresh air, a young climber who is much more than just talented; he has a good sort of psyche, driven by genuine love of the outdoors and love of the rock.

He was the first person to climb grade 31 in South Africa, they wanted to take his ropes away for falling too much, spent 20 months in total dirt bagging through the US and now has his sights set on a grade 33!

Andrew Pedley recently opened 2 new routes above the benchmark grade of 30. They are Axewound 32 at Wigwam and Pitfighter 31 at Boven.

I’ve been seeing a lot of great pictures recently on this site, of bouldering and sport climbing, and I think most would agree the best of them are taken by Micky Wiswedel. He manages to capture the climber AND the line, not many photographers seem to be able to do that as well as Micky.
