The annual Rory Memorial Challenge attracted over 70 teams plus their supporters and was held at Rensburgkop, Swinburne and Eagle Mountain at Mount Everest near Harrismith in the Free State during the March 21 – 23 long weekend.
I was in Boven on the weekend, and was having a glass of wine or two with Alex and Gustav Janse van Rensburg, co-owners of Roc ‘n Rope in town. Gustav confirmed what will surely be a devastating development for climbing in SA.

Last Sunday we had the first ever DWS comp in SA. This was held at Wilgepoort, near Bronkies. The MCSA purchased the land last year and one of the aims of the event was to open up more potential uses for the location.
For almost a decade, the MCSA and other parties fought with neighbours whose newly built houses now blocked access to the mountain. There is now a publicly owned servitude path that cuts in between 2 of the houses so you can get access to the mountain and the Kop.
The Cathedral in Jonkershoek is a magnificent piece of mountain. “Pity the rock quality is so bad”, I’ve always thought – this, based on experience of other routes in the area.

On the 1st of March, 2014 Jimbo Smith opened his ‘final’ project on the Jeopardy Wall on the Jeopardy Wall, Fountain Ledge, Table Mountain.
Their first few timid attempts on the easier climbs break the ice and soon the atmosphere heats up, the crowds appear, the guns start firing and its game time.
