High(er) risk areas are: Peers Cave, Table Mountain (around the Block House, which is not close to the climbing) and Lions Head (it's been a while since anyone was mugged there though).

Take extra care at Peers Cave - see this post regarding the last Peers Cave mugging that occurred in late December. I would recommend going in a large group and parking at the Parks board offices down the road as car break in's do occur.
At Silvermine, best park at the main car park - there was a car break-in at the Lower Silvermine car park also during December, but I reckon it was a ('December Xmas shopping') once off  (assuming they will be back to shop again next December).

Other advice: Do not leave anything valuable in an unattended car (unlike France there is a small chance that your car will be broken in into ;) If you must, make sure that it is out of view.
If you're the militant type Pepper spray is probably your best defence. If you're not and you do get accosted, just hand over your goods its not worth getting hurt for replaceable items (see the debate in the Peers Cave mugging thread).

Also worth checking out is Montagu 2 hours from Cape Town and Waterval Boven 3 hours from JHB

Now that I have painted a really gloomy picture of SA climbing... have a blast and don't worry, it is very unlikely that you will get mugged :P
It's not that bad :!:
