I think I'll rather post this here than in the general area.

I started climbing last year and am up to about 30 climbs and a few leads on grades up to 19 (although I found the grade 15's at Montagu feels more like 18's to me lol). Sport Climbing only.

I have two questions:
1) Being a diver being used to logging each dive and experience, I have been looking for a climb log application for ipad/iphone. I got one called "crags", which is pretty decent, but the you have to create each crag and route yourself, as the database only has info for Europe (as if the photos online doesn't make you jealous enough). It's pretty nice in the sense that the details about crags and routes per area is updated and commented on by the community (much like this forum). Does anyone know of another app perhaps which is updated and shares information that caters for the South African crowd?

2) Myself and 2/3 other people are going to Montagu this weekend for some climbing. However, I am leaving Cape Town on Thursday evening already if anyone wants to join me. Will be camping at De Bos. I have all my own kit, but a partner for climbing on Friday doesn't quite fit in my backpack. I don't mind doing the comfy grades, but as much as I would love to be proficient in the 20's and up, I wouldn't want someone to get bored with climbing the 15's to 19's with me, but if you want to go andamhappy to climb those, send me a pm asap.

I have leave and would hate to have to sit and twiddle thumbs and leave Cape Town Friday only if I could've climbed on Friday morning already.

Last thing I'd like to mention, kudo's to the montagu locals. I was in Montagu two weekends ago, on all the climbs I did there, the bolts look pretty new and well maintained. It was clean and the locals was friendly, helpful and you felt like family when you drive in there. But honestly, how far are the plans putting an escalator up to bold and beautiful? j/k

Hi bennie,

In answer to your first piont,

Cheack out 8A.nu You can log all your routes and it grades you against other climbers across the globe.

there is a link on the climbza home page.

I'm probably heading up to montagu this week end so maybe i'll see you at De bos.

Cheers

Thanks Dingle. I had a look at 8a.nu. But I must admit I am not a big fan of the functionality. You still have to capture all the routes and you need to convert all the grades to US. I am liking the online sync though. It seems very much geared to trad climbing. And at $4 I can find enough functionality in the Crag app. I paid the $4 anyway for 8a.nu and have an account there now, but I think I am going to stick with the free Crag app. (of course in no way am I playing down your advice lol. I appreciate your input.)

What I have done though is to start sharing the routes and crags I have already set up manually and will update as I climb and capture older climbs. These are the first set of South African routes and crags on the database. This means anyone that has this app can go into the app and go browse and will find some of Peer's Cave and Montagu's climbs that I've done and captured. It would be nice if whoever has this app could start doing the same for other routes & crags.

Here is the link to the app below, it's free, works on Ipad and iphone (ipad is the smaller iphone interface, but just click the 2x button at the bottom right to make it bigger)

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/crags-cl ... 06815?mt=8

AFAIK the UCT-MSC is having their Fresher's Montagu outing this weekend. Make sure you plan ahead so you have a place to stay! Beginner crags may be a tad busy too.

Have a great weekend.

Wow, what a weekend! Thanks for the responses. I met a number of really awesome people this weekend, not only at De Bos, but also at the crags! Still looking for the guy that put grease on pipe dreams tho!

Hey Funguye, nice to meet you on Saturday, I see you were climbing into the twilight on Sunday evening.
That was one impressive winger you took whilst removing the 'grease' :thumleft:

Nice to see so many people taking an interest in climbing - there must have been about 50 people at Legoland (mostly UCT-MSC guys) !

Hey guys, I'm acctually trying to develop an app, that does track climbing. It does alot of the same sort of stuff that 8A's one does accept that it is personal and only you have access to it.

The biggest issue that im having with the app being developed is that it is developed on Microsoft excel, but this is just the biggining stages of the app, as im only a first year in programming. Later on ill try developing an app for iPhone and Ipad etc, but when im done ill post a link here for people to beta test and give feed back on it. When i have a chance ill post a youtube video on its basics.

I'll automate it asmuch as possible :P

You should make an 8a app that you log your climbs and when the phone gets internet, ie a signal or wifi in the case of my ipod, it automatically logs the route on 8a! Now that I would want. Too bad coding for apple products is horrible otherwise I would give it a go. Android all the way! :)
