I was at Truitjies two weekends ago and the place is burnt out and access has been stopped by Cape Nature I think. Anybody know what happened and how long it is going to be closed?

Hi Russell. On the 29th September a baboon climbed an electricity pylon nearby, got fried to death, and the burning carcase on fire fell down into the dry fynbos so setting light to the area. If this sounds like an April Fool's story to you, the same thing happened in Du Toit's kloof some years back, just not the same baboon of course!
CNC have closed the entire area around Truitjies, even though it appeared from a distance that where we climb may not have been affected. Difficult to tell through binoculars. I have asked the MCSA chairman to take this closure issue up with CNC to see what can be allowed and when. Take comfort that even the famous Chris Bonington was turned back and could not climb there when he visited last month.

Have there been any further developments concerning Truitjieskraal access?

Toejam the correct number is 027 4822807. I don't surpose you actually tried phoning Kromriver yourself before you posted this did you? According to the lady I spoke to at Kromrivier it is still closed

Got a reply from the Conservation Manager at Cederberg Wilderness &
Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve.

Truitjies is still closed and she reckons it's going to be a long time before it is re-opened.
