re-opening of Redhill?
Re: re-opening of Redhill?
Thank you to all climbers who attended.
As agreed upon last night and as per SANP's requirements, we will be doing an EMP for the bouldering for the whole of the Cape Peninsula, including Red Hill areas.
Without this EMP, Red Hill will remain closed indefinitely.
Red Hill's moratorium stands until the bouldering EMP has been finalised.
SANP will complete the EMP by end of August with the MCSA and bouldering community's assistance.
SANP will then give a presentation of the newly drafted EMP to the bouldering community at the MCSA Club House in Cape Town in early September, thereafter opening the EMP to the other mountain users through October.
At the end of October, the draft will be finalised and the EMP released.
Thank you again for all the assistance and support from the bouldering community. We are nearly there.

Re: re-opening of Redhill?
Thank you to Delaney and all that was involved with the process. Sorry I couldnt be there but its a bit of a way to fly from London
It looks like this process will hopefully secure boulderings future in the Cape. I think this may also come with the need for a proper guide book to be published with all the access regulations and guidelines that will inevitably come with the EMP.
Again, many thanks to all involved
Nick

Re: re-opening of Redhill?
Hi All
We are nearing the final stages of the Bouldering EMP. I am busy setting up a meeting this week with SANP to confirm boulder sites and which of these sites will require site inspections. As far as I have been told, the EMP document itself is nearly complete.
I will continue to keep all in the loop and once again, thank you for your patience and support.
Kind regards
Delaney and MCSA Rock SubCOM

Re: re-opening of Redhill?
Hi All
Niel and I met with SANP yesterday evening and went through the first draft of the Bouldering EMP. Everything is looking very good and it was a great meeting. SANP has been very helpful to date.
The next phase will be the site visits which will hopefully take place this month so that the final draft can be completed and sent out to the bouldering community and other mountain users for comments.
This will be around the beginning of October so that at the end of October, all users' comments will be taken into account and added to the draft if valid so that the final approved Bouldering EMP will go live early November.
Redhill is to be included in the site visits so all is looking very promising.
We will keep you in the loop as things progress.
Thanks so much

Have the site visits been done yet or are we waiting on them?

Re: re-opening of Redhill?
Hi guys
SANP has been ducking my emails for the past 3 weeks or so but we are now back online and trying to decide on dates for each of the following areas:
CBD, Newlands and Cecilia Forests
Redhill and Blackhill
Topside
Niel and I have full time jobs so we need to negotiate time off work but SANP still need to propose dates for us to work with.
I will be posting updates on this forum when dates have been confirmed and once each site visit has been concluded.
Thank you again to all who have respected the moratorium at Redhill.

Re: re-opening of Redhill?
Hi All
The Site Visits are finally starting.
Monday 3rd December at 16H00: CBD boulders
Tuesday 4th December at 14H00/Friday 7th December at 14H00 (TBC): Redhill and Blackhill boulders
Topside and the Forests (Newlands and Cecilia) still need to be confirmed but Topside will be done over a weekend. As soon as I have more information, I will let you know.
Just to clarify in case there is any confusion, it is only Redhill (Grootkop, Coppermine and Easter Island) that is currently off limits to bouldering. All other areas are still open and are under review for the purpose of the EMP only. We will publish all areas that are off limits and those that aren't once the EMP has been finalised.
Thank you all again for your patience. We really appreciate it.
Kind regards

Re: re-opening of Redhill?
Hey guys, how'd the inspection go yesterday?
Re: re-opening of Redhill?
Hi All
The site visit at CBD has been completed and it seems that, since most of the boulders have rocky/stoney bases, the biggest problem would be the unofficial paths in between them. Since the service path already exists, that will no doubt be the main path to the boulders and then a contour path will be established to access all the boulders.
We will only know once we see the final draft of the EMP.
We are now waiting on the site manager at Redhill to let us know when he/she is available for the site visit there.
Thanks again for your support and patience.
Kind regards

Re: re-opening of Redhill?
Hi All
With Niel going on leave this week, we are short someone to take SANP to view the boulders at Newlands Forest, Cecilia Forest and Topside & Echo Valley this week.
Please can anyone keen and able to assist contact me directly so that I can put you in touch with SANP to organise the site visits.
I would go but I unfortunately don't know any of these areas well enough to take SANP to them.
I hope some of you will be able to assist us.
Thank you so much

Hi All
The Redhill and Blackhill site visit has been confirmed for 21st December from 2pm.
Topside will have to wait until next year as we don't have anyone to take SANP to the boulders but I am hoping we can get the forests done this weekend.
Thank you so much

Delaney, you ROCK!!!
Re: re-opening of Redhill?
Hi All
The following site visits have now been completed:
CBD Boulders
Blackhill Boulders
Redhill - Coppermine Boulders
Redhill - Vanilla Sky
Unfortunately, I completely forgot how to get to Vajra and Mushroom areas :-( The result of not visiting Redhill in a while.
It's sad to say that on some of the boulders at Redhill, Leighan and I found fresh chalk marks on the rock. For those of you who have adhered to the moratorium, thank you very much. For those who haven't, please can you not climb at Redhill again until the EMP has been finalised.
Site Visits still to take place are the following:
Redhill - Vajra and Mushroom
Cecilia Forest
Newlands Forest
Echo Valley
Topside
If anyone is able to assist us with any of the above site visits, please can you get in touch with me on delaney@rockchicks.co.za? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much

Re: re-opening of Redhill?
Hi All
SANP has the following days and times available for the site visits:
Vajra and Mushroom Areas (Redhill):
Monday 21st January (1pm onwards)
Tuesday 22nd January (1pm onwards)
Wednesday 23rd January (1pm onwards)
Friday 25th January (1pm onwards)
Topside and Echo Valley:
Saturday and Sunday 26th and 27th January
So far, I have no offers from the bouldering community to assist with these site visits. If I knew where these areas are, I would go myself :-(
Is there really no one in the whole bouldering community who can help Niel out with the above?

Perhaps it would be better to talk through Cutloose?

Hi Sheldon
This is great, thank you!
I will notify SANP and see if they can possibly do a 5pm during the week or a weekend.
Once we know, I'll brief you on how the process works.
Thank you again. I can't tell you how much we appreciate this.

Hi All
Thank you so much to those who contacted me and who are able to assist with the final site visits. This will move things along nicely.
We have tentative dates in place for the remaining Redhill and Topside/Echo Valley visits and are waiting on SANP to confirm for us.
SANP still needs to get back to us regarding the forest visits with Sheldon.
I'll keep you all updated and thank you again. I can't emphasise how much I appreciate your help.
