I have been climbing for about 6 years. I love it.
23 September 2006 I was involved in my first serious climbing accident
Together with my climbing partner, Danie, we witnessed Marianne and James’ accident. I was first to abseil down to them and being the artist type dreamer person that I am, I was deeply moved by the experience.
I guess I feel obliged to say something because it angers me that there have to be so much politics about what happened.
When the shit hits the fan, you just try deal with what’s handed to you the best you can. Fckups occur daily but its what happens afterwards that matter.
I was very impressed with the way that James handled the situation, enough respect.
It was extremely chilling holing Mariannes head and looking down on at her broken face (although she was still very pretty) but it made we realize how fragile we are, even Marianne, an icon in climbing.
What I want to say is accidents like this, in the end, is part of climbing. Luckily Marianne will be alright; unfortunately that’s not always the case. The only way to not just let it be another accident is if we all allow ourselves to learn something out of it.
Wear a fckn helmet, take time to think about were you are and always have respect for the position that you are in
Life is beautifully precious.
Thanx Gustav (whom without, a lot of cool climbing missions/events/rescues would not be happening), Danie, Elrika and Albert
