Hi

Anyone know what the South African top 10 classic routes are?

Should sports routes also be considered for the top 10, or just trad?

Firstly, why shouldn't you include sport routes?

That said, as far as what the classics are, I can only comment on routes that I have tried (no suprises, all sport routes). Some suggestions...

Snapdragon, Boven
Cool Like That, Montagu
Monster, Boven
The Gift, Boven
Unlimited Power, Boven
Paws, Oudtshoorn
Lotter's Desire, Boven
Alice in Chains, Harrismith
Atomic Aardvark, Boven
Something Esoteric, Boven

Not a SA list (only the Northern Part of the Country) and out-dated (e.g. Blyderiver not included) but take look at some of Russ Dodding's lists at:

The last time I got some sort of consensus was in 2000, and the list of routes was split between Trad and sport, although the sport routes in this list are all in the Cape that was because of the plethora of magnificent sports routes in every province, so we agreed that each province would have their own list of \"best sport routes\".
Trad(Adventure) routes: Jacobs Ladder (TM), Klein Winterhoek Frontal (Tulbagh), Celestial Journey (Cedarberg), Something of Value (Blouberg),
Dinkum Dog (Karbonaartjeskraal Cape). I could give you the discussion and criteria for this list, but that would bore you to death.
Sports routes (Cape only): Sterling Silver (Silvermine), Sickle Moon (The Mine), Billy the Kid (Rocklands), Gospel Express (Steeple,Montague), Wild Card (Oorlogskloof, Montague).
The arguments and updates to the above can go on forever, or else the list gets longer. It is easier to pick the best 100 than the best 10.
Regards,
Mike Scott

you can't really name the top 10 / 100 whatever unless you climbed all the routes in SA.

a list of must-do classics would be kewl though.
