IMPACT OF FLOODING ON ACCESS
Serious flood damage has been caused in many areas of the Western and Southern Cape as a result of the extreme weather conditions experienced from 11th to 13th November 2008. Major roads had to be closed, and some towns were cut off.
The damage caused by the heavy rain has rendered access into certain areas totally impossible for the moment. For example, all the good work done in October on the access road to our WAAIHOEKSBERG property has been totally undone, and the Van Zyl’s at Somerso cannot use their normal access road from their farmhouse to the tarred road. They have not even tried to get to the upper portions of their farm due to the flooding and the flood damage caused to their roads. So access by vehicle for JAN DU TOITS KLOOF and WAAIHOEKSBERG is impossible for the moment, and the Van Zyl’s can give no indication as to when the situation will return to normality.
The same situation may well apply to other mountain areas in the Western Cape such as the HOTTENTOTS HOLLAND, JONKERSKHOEK and HEX RIVER mountains. So if members are planning trips by vehicle into mountain areas, please check on road conditions with Cape Nature or the farmer whose land must be crossed. Even 4 x 4 vehicles may not be able to handle some of the conditions on the minor roads and tracks.
The Access Sub-Committee will try to keep the office informed about the situation as it unfolds.
So the message is – CHECK BEFORE YOU SET OUT.
