The company I'm currently working for has a climbing wall. The problem is it was here when we moved in and the previous company removed all the holds.

I have suggested to my boss that as a team building effort we create our own holds.

I read up a bit and it looks like the easiest way of making these would be to create clay templates for the holds and pour Fiberglass Resin in to the holds with a washer where the bolt will go. And then obviously drilling a hole through the washer for the bolt.

I would appreciate any suggestions if there are easier ways of making these.

Shaping foam and silicone. It costs a bit more, but you can get much better holds, a far better texture and it is a easier process.

Fiberglass resin is too brittle, the holds will break as you tighten them up. If you're needing holds, you can get in touch for a quote, might be easier for you. The mold making process isn't that straight forward or cheap...

I would like to buy the holds but that is pretty expensive too. Worked out that we need about 60 - 70.

Doing it as a team builder would be pretty cool though. Just need to get the correct supplies.

Just a thought...

Instead of making all the holds yourself. Make woodies for your footholds (and even a few handholds) and then buy in the rest of the grips.
There is a learning curve to making grips. e.g. you don't want your grips breaking (which could result in an injury) and you don't want very rough grips (that tear your skin up after one session).

Buy...at Geco Grips....not worth the effort to make your own.

From experience, I suggest you budget at least for R2000 in write offs before gaining the skill to make moulds depending on your hand skills. Otherwise you will end up with second rate stuff that hurt tendons and looks less than good.

I got a nice collection of moulds now, but it took time. It would be a lot cheaper for you to follow Justin's advice.
