Heya

Been rope-soloing some and using an unmodified gri-gri with a figure 8 on the bite (every 2-3 metres) as backup should the gri-gri not do it's thing.
Do you recon this is relatively safe or am I being silly?

Have you ever looked into a silent partner? That is assuming you want to lead climb all alone. If you can reach the top anchors and you're ok with top roping the route, why not use a shunt. its less complicated than the silent partner. I reckon climbing with the gri-gri the way you are might not be completely unsafe, but I'm sure you'll be a lot more likely to fall taking up slack every 2m or so and then still making fig 8 knots in between. I'm of the believe to rather down climb than taking unnecessary falls.

My opinion: Silent partner if you wanna lead, shunt if you happy to top rope those routes that keep giving you hell at the crux, then hit it when you have a belay partner.

Just to clarify, I lead climb on Trad, rope solo. I anchor the end of the rope to the first stance stance (it has to be bomber). I have made fig 8 knots in the rope, leading from my backpack to the gri-gri. In case the gri gri does not catch me, the fig 8 will jam up against the gri gri. As I climb up and come to a knot that is against the gri gri, I untie it in order to let the rope flow through the gri gri as per normal. Once I get to the stance (and build a bomber), I throw the rest of the rope down, abseil and clean and then I use my shunt (on tope-rope). Do not use this method if anything is unclear.
The Silent partner is expensive and bulky, but probably ther right tool.
