Hi there! I'm kind of an ex-pat (by luck more than design), and have gotten into climbing over the last couple of years. Due to lack of consistent practice I'm not all that good yet (things improve when I manage to get a lot of routes in, how about that?). My lovely boyfriend is an enthusiastic climber with a fair bit of experience and I would love to take him to see Cape Town and show off our rather spectacular crags... even tho I never appreciated them fully while living there, but lets not talk about that, shall we? I would really appreciate some input as to the best time of year for climbing, and any advice on which crags to go to (ie, which ones have both beginner and more challenging routes). Can anyone give me any suggestions?

Well the obvious answer is summer! Winter is OK if you get the weather right. But the last two weeks for example have been awesomely bad...sigh

Anytime from September through March will be great though, you can always fiind a crag in the shade ofr part of the day or in hte sun if it is cold.

In terms of crags there is more rock than you can shake a stick at! Lower Silvermine is great for beginners (grades 13-18) but has some harder climbs to. (22-26) But in the height of summer can be very hot in the morning and gets fairly crowed.

Best would be to get the guide book it has all the routes.

Seriously tho the weather at the moment couldnt get any better, cool sunny, simply marvelous. Summer in my opinion is way too hot for any serious climbing except at higher altitudes. Sunny winter days (although rare) are the ticket!

This is my thinking - I've managed to be very lucky on my holidays home in the winter, normally gorgeous and clear skies for the most part. But, you can bet your ass that if I plan a holiday banking on it, it will rain for two weeks.
