Hi, I am gong to SA in July/Aug, and then I wonder where the best places to go climbing would be, being winter time and all.. How is Montagu this time of the year? I'm predominantly thinking of sport climbing, maybe some easy trad. I've been in Montagu in Dec, would love to go back, but then again.. not if the weather is all crap;) How is it further north, Waterval Boven for instance?
So, any tips would be cool! Thanks

Montagu should be good, I have not been there too much in winter though. I recommend Rocklands, sport climbing is of high quality, there is trad too! Obviously loads of bouldering too. Lots of options, you won't get bored.

Waterval Boven will be cold but there are a lot of options for climbing there, particularly in winter time as there are some crags that stay in the sun all day making it brilliant for a really cold day.

The Magaliesberg offers a wide variety of trad climbing, up to about 3 pitches. It will be cold but the conditions will be amazing, some warm clothes and the right local contacts and you'll have a really good time in the area.

It won't rain up here, but in the Cape it could go for a long time without drying up.

Durban offers brilliant climbing in winter too... There are numerous crags really close together.

Umgeni Valley is a beautiful set of crags in a Game Reserve that should not be missed. If you've been to Cape Town and you want some variety, check this out! Umgeni is about 9 hours from Boven, so it's not tooo far if you're on a road trip across SA.

These are the places at the top of my list (outside of the Western Cape). I love the climbing in the Western Cape too, Montagu is cool, but it's not Boven. People can argue with me, but Boven is the best sport destination in the country. Western Cape most-likely has some of the best trad climbing in the country in places like Taffelberg, Wolfberg and Table Mountain.

So do yourself a favour and see a bunch of places.

Thank's a lot:) I've actually been in Durban and Umgeni (loved it!), Montagu and Western Cape too, so I kind of want to try Waterval Boven (guess it's about time:). Only been in SA in spring and summer, so winter will be new, that's also why I wondered.
Well, a bit of coldness doesn't scare me (I'm norwegian), but the rain does
