Hi guys,

Is the treatment agianst malaria needed when coming in Autumn/Winter (may-june) to Durban and all around the coast to Cape town and rocklands ?

Would you recommend to take the treatment for this period, do locals take something against malaria ?

Thanks for your replies

Brice

Ya dude...no malaria in South Africa unless you're far up in the North East...
No climbing there as far as I know :D

Let us know when you're here and I'm sure there will be ample people to show you the climbing :D

a couple of visiting friends climbed at Boven and went to Kruger Park early in April this year. They were advised by a doctor (and I said the same) that malaria should not be a problem. Both got malaria. Be careful if you go to Kruger Park; seems like malaria incidences is on the increase there. Boven is malaria free.

Hi guys,

Thanks for ur replies ! I am not really fond of all that medicals, but i just wanted to have the sentiment of locals on the subject.

The actual programm wich may vary, depending on what we find locally, and the people we meet there is :
- 22 to 27 may : Durban and surroundings... trying to climb there, but it seems not have so much things to climb there... ?!!!
- 28 may to 5 june : Taking the road (bus/train?!!) to Cape Town, making some stops to visit the parks.... and climbing above all, in particular at Oudtshoorn and Montaigu
- a few days to visit CP and surrondings
- 7 to 17 june : going to boulder in amazing Rocklands !!!! 8)

We are couple, usually climbing something like 24 to 28 in sport routes.

Just send us a message on the private section, if some dudes are ok to show us a bit the surroundings and possibilly to come and climb with us !

Cheers
Manon and Brice

Hi there

There is definitely no Malaria in Durban but there ARE lots of things to climb!

Umgeni Valley is a must see and there is climbing in Kloof Gorge, Howick Falls and Shongweni Dam. You can find the detail in Roger Natrass's "A Climber's Guide to Kwa Zulu Natal Rock". If you are looking for a copy or a climbing partner that is local to show you around pop in to the local gym.

www.southernrockgym.co.za

Hope you have an awesome, mosquito free trip.

Candice

Here's a song written specifically for your trip.

(well no Malaria anyway!)

At that time of year in those areas you are unlikely to see many mosquitos and almost certainly won't be at risk of malaria.

Given how unpleasant pretty much all of the prophylactic medicines are I really wouldn't bother, and just use one of the many effective insect repellants you can get locally if you don't want to get bitten; you can still get a reaction to bites; (swelling, itching, soreness etc, ) especially if you aren't used to them.

Give me mosqitoes over scottish midges any day!
