My little girl is 3 years old. She wants to climb too. I bought her a full body harness.
I am not sure what to do first... How do you train kiddies? Do they boulder first? From what age do they climb with shoes? Any advise welcome...

I think it depends largely on what you hope to achieve by starting your kid climbing this early.

Are you hoping to produce the next Chris/Christina Sharma?
Do you just want your kid to have fun?

I've taken a few kids (not that young though - think the youngest was about 5) climbing and generally they seem to have the most fun on routes at the gym - bouldering walls tend to be too steep and gnarly and routes on rock can be too hard and reachy. Even at the gym, a 3 YO is probably going to battle to reach. Probably your best bet is to find your nearest climbing gym and ask the route setters to make up some super easy routes.

In all likelyhood, buying shoes at this stage is a waste of money - PEP stores sell canvas takkies for about R30 and these work fairly well on the big footholds on the gym.

I've taken my 2 1/2 year old son climbing in Newlands Forest a couple of times. I just find a couple of waist high juggy slabs and he seems to really enjoy it. The teachers at the play school thought he had a very wild imagination - until we confirmed that he had been climbing...
