Well, of course, it's not official at all, because I'm saying it.

However, I'm on the last two weeks of a six-week solo dirt bike tour of Cambodia and I have seen much of the country.

I have rock boots and a chalk bag with me. These are completely superfluous as I can truthfully say that there is NO CLIMBABLE ROCK in Cambodia.

Cambodia is mostly as flat as a (very thin) pancake and what high ground there is is covered in thick jungle filled with landmines. It's not a welcoming environment but luckily that's not a problem anyway as there's no rock up there.

I didn't see any rock at all in the first four weeks except climbable temples.
Yesterday, riding in the 'mountains' -- nothing over 1100m but very attractive, covered in dense green jungle -- I saw small butresses of some sort of rock. It was very green and broken. Anyway it would take a week or so to get to the rock and..........did I mention landmines?!

Go to Vietnam, etc., you know it makes sense!

Cheers!

This will make for some funny RD with better descriptions of the approach than the actual route.

Alas, you are off route for sure. Cambodia does have climbing and loads of rock, you must just look in the right places. But, it is just too damn hot this time of year for it to matter.

Toejam, I have just found this site:

http://www.rockclimbingincambodia.com/

OK, there seems to be quite a lot of rock in Cambodia. I am stunned!
I didn't come here specifically to climb so didn't check it out first.

What I did come here to do is to travel and I really have seen a lot of this country. It is mostly flat as I said. The people are lovely and there's lots to do so please come here.

However, there is nothing of the feel you get in SA, France, Spain, US, etc., etc. where you're craning your neck out of the car window at the lifetimes of unclimbed rock that you're driving past.

Anyway, I stand corrected. Thanks, mate.

What more can I say. Rock On, Cambodia!

P.S.

Toejam, and I'm really not being superior here, I promise:

This is the monsoon season and you might not climb because it might be wet. The temperature is a benign 30 degrees (sometimes day and night) and humidity >90%. This isn't the hot season.

In January, watch out! Very high temperatures and hordes of tourists in search of temples, guns, sex etc.

Just in case you have a trip out there.

Cheers
