Bolts at the Steeple
See below the bottom bolt of Gospel Express !
I've been wondering for a while what it would like under the hanger, so last weekend I took the hanger off.
Anyone like to hazard a guess as to what type of steel the bolt might be?
The corrosion around the bolt does inspire!!

Re: Bolts at the Steeple

RT=rust-through (or bend-open).
bolted 2001.
not very confidence-inspiring....

So is it safe to climb now? or not really? Are there any other routes at montagu that aren't really safe to climb?

Re: Bolts at the Steeple
Yes, these two routes are 100%
I've been asked to go and inspect the routes at the Farside (across the road from Legoland) and bolts on the back side of The Steeple.
Otherwise, nothing else comes to mind.
If anyone is concerned about a specific route, please post here or email me justin@climbing.co.za

Re: Bolts at the Steeple
Here is the report on the bolts that got taken out: Quasimodo Bolt Corrosion Investigation
Anyone who wants to support the Montagu Bolting Fund can deposit donations into the account below – I’ve opened this savings account specifically for bolting in and around Montagu. I will keep a spreadsheet record of what was received by whom as well as outgoing expenditures.
Please email me the deposit slip & you are also welcome to include suggestions of whether you would like the funds to go to re-bolting or new routes.
Climb ZA’s emphasis right now is to bolt “lower grade” routes at easily accessible crags as this grows the sport.

Cheers,
Justin
