Local warm jacket manufacturers

Post by lee123 » Wed May 24, 2017 12:13 pm

Are there any local manufacturers that specialise in making really warm down/synthetic jackets/fleeces, other than Kway, Cape Storm and First Ascent [they all make hit and miss products these days in my opinion, the latter two since selling out to Holdsport]? Ideally in Cape Town...

I am aware of Quiver, but they don't make insulated jackets.

Makoti Down in Uitenhage make a waterproof down jacket. Check out http://www.makoti.co.za/

I have a J-tex jacket, it's an awesome jacket, well made & really warm. Ideal for conditions < -10°C preferably with windchill or it just gets too hot to wear.

i try to support local guys as much as i can, but Cape Storm fell off a cliff after selling-out, K-Way is for caravan campers and First Ascent is a mixed bag of the good, the bad and the ugly. for some stuff i just want premium quality products but the 40% import duty on textiles is bitch - so lately my downies have been bought when travelling friends can bring something back from overseas.

Also a useful idea to subscribe to the runwaysale.co.za mailing list; they sell The North Face gear every now and then at decent discounts.
there's a First Ascent sale currently but most of the good stuff has been sold out.

Below -10 exceeds my requirements, I am just looking for the worst Cape Town and surrounds weather, which is 0 to 10 degrees I guess.
My sleeping bag is rated to -5, I guess that is what I would like as it is usable in Cape Town's cold weather (below -10 I would get no use from...) and I can have abnormally cold weather and still live to tell the tale .

CT rarely drops below +10. Windchill and rain are the danger factors. If you're not going into sub-zero temperatures I would recommend getting a synthetic-fill jacket rather - cheaper, machine washable and readily available from local manufacturers. Supporting the local guys also gives you better after-sales service.
Something like this:

Lekker shop!
