Beal Birdie recall

Hi all seeing a few places that say there is a recall on the 2019 birdies anyone know anything about this ?

Thanks for mentioning this. I've asked the Beal SA distributor for comment (if any of the affected units were brought into SA?).
Nice to see its just the lowering lever which could be faulty (the catch mechanism remains safe!).

My one is affected. Serial ends in 12/19 and there is fair amount of play on the lever like the document suggests. I've emailed Beal directly already

Received the following from the local Beal Distributor:

Further to your enquiry – herewith the necessary info:

1. There is a chance that there are “at risk” units in the SA market – so inspections are required
2. Please inspect your Birdie as described in the attached document (see below). If your Birdie fails the inspection process – please contact Ram Mountaineering to arrange a replacement

The issue is around the possibility that the handle snaps off during the lowering process. Should this happen the unit will lock automatically & the climber will be safely held by the unit – but the belayer will not have a means to lower the suspended climber. As a result the issue does not pose a safety risk; but could require a rescue.
