Hello all brainiacs, I need some advice.

I am looking for mechanism to ascend a rope with
to be used for climbing and ascending a yacht's mast.. any suggestions?

Preferably reasonably priced or easily obtained second hand or both :)

I have been thinking a Croll and a one traditional ascender.
Also I am very concerned about the wear and tear of 'toothed' mechanism on climbing rope, anyone keen to allay or confirm my fears?

Thanks

Hi

All of these can be used to ascend a rope and will not damage the rope:

Prussiks, Prussik with Shunt/GriGri (any autolocking belay device - so Reverso3/ATC Guide). If you use the shunt just use a large 'biner as a handhold.

Jumars/Ropeman etc will (slightly) damage a rope but I doubt that it will be excessive, anyway they all (the new BD ascender less so) load the sheath rather than the core so the main load bearing part of the rope will be fine. Rope wear tends to occur when a weighted rope rubs where it runs over an edge as the friction is then confined to one small area. Whereas you will be spreading the damage over the entire length of the rope.

Jumar and Croll is probably the easiest/smoothest. If you are really worried about safety, use a second line and run a shunt/prussik backup
