To the person who left a white static rope on the Africa Ledge abseils.

I confiscated it.
This is why:

1) To ensure that this message reached you,

2) By feeding the rope directly through the bolts it you made it impossible for other climbers to use their own ropes without getting excessive rope burn when pulling their ropes down.

3) We had to use your rope because of point 2. By neglecting to tie a knot in the end of your rope you almost killed me today.

Claim you rope with an apology.
I live in Stellenbosch, so getting it back is your problem.

Otherwise I'll be sending it to Marshall.

Hann: Let me get this straight...

1) You abseiled down a rope you were a stranger to
2) You didn't check if there was a knot at the end (and are now blaming the rope's owner?)
3) You commit theft in order to "make a point"?

What if the owner was/is still on the mountain because you took their rope? Surely they left it there because they still needed it?
I don't understand why you should be apologised to for stealing someone else's rope?

Confiscated??? Are you the trad police?

Yeah, I'm with Julia on this.

How is this person making it impossible to use it "without getting excessive rope burn"? You're just too lazy to pull up this person's rope, pull it out of the chains, leave it there and thread yours through.

If this was me, I would firstly be glad my rope wasn't taken with intent on keeping it, but then I would be pissed that someone took it just to prove a silly point.

No, it's you're problem. You took it, so now give it back. Otherwise, put it back where you found it

Lets say they were maybe in a rush- ie going to the hospital etc, and then when they come back there is nothing left. Bad choice

Overreacted?
Perhaps, and I'd be willing to admit it.

I'm not convinced though.

Keep the following in mind:

1) the rope was knotted onto the bolts.
- so not a simple pull up and leave effort.

2) we used the rope and left it in place in case the owner was actively using it.

3) the leavers of the rope had additional ropes.
- the static stopped a pitch short from the deck so they needed to do one more abseil.
- hence me being so upset about the absence of end knot.

5) I spoke to 5 different parties on the ledge, and nobody knew who's rope it was.
- most were unhappy about said rope.

6) when we got back to our packs, 3 hours later, it was still in place.

Ever been parked in by some student visiting his girlfriend?
Ever had to walk door to door to find this student so he may remove his car?

Same principal.

So, if I'm wrong/overreacted.
Convince me.

(hang on to that thought Marshall, seems you may not be getting that rope after all)

1) It is approx 50m.

2) Was tied into the bolts with a "Death Triangle"
The knot at the bottom of the triangle was an overhand knot.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ameri ... iangle.png

3) It was hanging down in a single strand.

4) It had approx 2 or 3 meters of rope left on the bottom ledge where the second abseil anchor is.

Sorry Hann but I have to agree, it seems you overreacted somewhat. Pull the rope up, untie the knots, thread your rope and abseil. I know it sucks and was impolite of "them" but still

Innocent explanation - I met the owner on the ledge yesterday.

Hann I'll msg you and the owner offline

Maybe all academic now but Julia concluding that Hann stole the rope is as ridiculous and ill conceived a statement as any of the actions by the principal role players in this episode. Seems to me that if Hann had pulled the rope up and untied it to then abseil down (without the rope) would have rendered the rope redundant and dormant on the ledge ... (pointless) …

So he took the rope with him ... if he had abseiled down and into the party who left the rope below he would no doubt would have given it to them (after a few expletives and friendly gestures) ... They were clearly not around so he took it with him and then posted that he had it and X should come and fetch it ... Ant resolved the matter ....

Tied outcome!

Ok,

So I overreacted a little.
(Don't worry, it will not be the last time)

Seems the owner had a minor epic the previous day, and came to collect the rope the next day.

At the owner: Sorry, you'll get it back soon.
