The indoor climbing wall CityRock is in Observatory where all the climbers congregate so a good place to meet people and get in with the climbing community.

There are lots of backpackers hostels in Observatory (Obs) which you can stay in while you find your feet and find somewhere to live (much easier to do once you're here).
