Hi all,

We're heading off on a world climbing trip soon, and will be in Cape Town at the beginning of August. We're keen to go on a trip for about 2 weeks to Spitzkoppe in Namibia. Anyone in SA keen to join us?
Looks like excellent granite climbing in a beautiful desert setting.
We're a couple of experienced 30 year old Australian trad climbers. We climb up to about grade 22, but it seems like there's plenty of grades for everyone at Spitzkoppe. It would be great to have some company, the more the merrier I reckon.

Anyway reply to this post or send me an email at tonyworldwide(at)hotmail(dot)com if you're interested.

We're also planning on climbing for a month in Madagascar in September/October if anyone will be there.....

Cheers,
Tony.

This is so ironic. I logged on now to start a post of the same nature, but just in July.

I am going to be there 15 July, but not in August. I however was hoping to find more info, but I will start a separate post for that.

It would be awesome if you can share some info as to the condition of the bolts and the climbs. I will mail you separately.

Are you also going to go climb at Brandberg which is close to Spitzkoppe? That is the highest point in Namibia and there seem to be also some amazing climbs.

The guide book is great, there is also new climb RD's on this wiki. You should not expect the generous bolting at your local crag. Routes vary tremendously ito commitment, there is something for every skill level and style, from bouldering to routes with serious reputation. Best to set your sights lower than your current abilities.

Really an awesome and special place. Pity for the poor ethics employed in the past.

Will pm you both, maybe we can hook up.

Well, whereas I appreciate the sentiment, I haven't hooked up online since 2008, and was at least taken for dinner first. Colcachios to be exact. Turn out to be a psycho, could we start off with litle bit of e-mailling first? :P :thumright

Just kidding. I got your pm, I'll respond there :D

Aww Bennie, sorry to hear it didn't work out ;)

I can vouch for Henk - he's solid and was recently in Spitzkoppe - so you'd be happy (lucky) to have him along.

Did you mean by YOU vouching for him should make me feel more comfortable???? o_O :P

Ok seriously now, all jokes aside. I really do appreciate that he responded. I realise that I responded in the Climbing Partners section, and this does not mean we are a closed group AT ALL, we are currently two or three people wanting to go to Spitzkoppe and it would be great having access to someone that knows what's cooking there. First prize would be if our dates match up and he can join us!

I've pm'd him.

Thanks for your replies guys.

Funguye - Don't have a lot of route info as yet, the Guidebook does look good but it's hard to get a copy in Australia. I was planning on picking one up when I pass through cape town (looking forward to the climbing there too). I haven't looked into Brandberg yet.
Enjoy your trip in July!

Henk - Thanks, sent you a message through fb. You mentioned poor ethics; are some of the trad protectable routes bolted?

Would be great to hear from others interested too!

Cheers,Tony.

The latest climb pic from the gallery is a nice advertisement for Spitzkoppe- very excited to be heading here. Anyone is still welcome to come along!

Cheers,
Tony.

Also planning to head up to Namibia mid-late June or beginning of July. I have Family in Windhoek and Swakopmund, so potentially could offer a place to rest :) I would like to climb in Spitzkoppe (mainly) but there are also spots near Windhoek (Harmoni = Sandstone and Falkenberg=granite). Also, there is Ausenkehr on the way up (near the Orange river).

Would like to keep in contact with anyone going up during that time.

Cheers

@ Nadso: how long are you thinking? Its a long way to go for a week of climbing, and would rather 2-3 weeks.

on a completely practical note, what is the weather like then?

Weather is great. Cold at night with clear, crisp sunny days. Best time to be heading to Nam. I would love to go as long as possible but all depends on how long I can get away. Will know soon...

Just a bump to see if anyones keen now that its a bit closer to the date. Rough plan is to fly into Cape Town on the 29th July, rent a car on the 4th August and drive up to Spitzkoppe, breaking the drive at Fish River Canyon or maybe rocklands if possible. Climb about 2 weeks in Spitzkoppe and dump the car in Windhoek. Can't wait!

I am very sad to announce that I am out. The bank manager, my project manager and my weathered rope highly disagrees about the urgency of this trip, also my clinb partner had his whole trad rack...well..reallocated.

Good luck, post pics and share the info please after you've gone.
