Wits University Mountain Club (WUMC) is celebrating its 50th this year

We have a whole lot of meets planned (see below) to mark the occasion, and the overall plan is to go climbing in all 9 provinces! (Plus another country - Namibia).

All current, and past members of WUMC are invited, as well as any other MCSA people not that are keen to come along. (Friends and family also welcome!).

I will update this with some details of meet leaders (and any changes to the plan) but for now those interested can contact me at boydemma@gmail.com.

Formal Dinner : Magaliesberg (North-West) : Nov 21-22

Holiday Bouldering : Rocklands! (Northern Cape/Western Cape) : Dec

Dude, as an old WUMC member I find it a little whacko (not to piss on your battery) that your climbing venues (other than Spitzkoppe) are so unattractive to me. WUMC defined climbing in the Magalies, Wilgepoort, Blouberg, Die Hel, Skeerpoort and even the Cape Peninsula and Western Cape for over 20 years in the golden era of SA rock climbing. Times do change but if you want to entice a 50 year alumni then start as a climbing venue Magaliesberg....

Hi snort. Yes, I think times have changed. For instance the club is now predominantly about sport climbing, but we're trying to get the trad going again, and have replaced our old trad gear.

I'm sorry to hear that some of our venues are unappealing to you. Unfortunately I know very little, to nothing about Wilgepoort, Skeerpoort, Die Hel and Blouberg. That makes it difficult to organise meets there. I could ask other club members, but I suspect if you'd like to see a wumc reunion at such places, old members such as yourself would be the best equipped to organise it.

Hopefully you'll be able to make the meets that do appeal to you, like magalies and Spitzkoppe. Would be nice to see you there.

Dave's thoughts

As you can see, the first event coming up is a big party down at Swinburne! It's the long weekend where freedom day is on the Monday.

We're planning to do the main partying on the saturday night and will be selling food and drinks. Sunday morning will be the traditional fruit salad, and we're hoping that the weekend will involve some traditional wumc campfire songs, but we need old members to teach us the tunes, as we only have a record of the words! We're also hoping to be able to open a route/boulder problem in honour of the 50th, but will have to see what's as yet uncharted.

Anyway, if you would like us to book your accomodation, please let suzi - Suzanne_grindley@yahoo.com>, by wednesday of next week. Otherwise you are welcome to arrive in the time and manner of your choosing. You could even stay ay Mount everest and join us for the party etc.

Just an update:

The Swinburne meet was pretty awesome apart from some rain. Was nice to see some old faces back again, and we did manage to open a new boulder problem.

Wave Cave weekend did not happen for want of a meet leader. I think we will hopefully be down there though for the Durban Bouldering Competition in July.

Spitzkoppe is good to go. We will be there from June 23 until July 3.
