In South Africa we have a few interesting competitions which always comes with mayor fun! The Boven Rock Rally, Montagu rock rally, The Rory Lowther and every 18 months the all exclusive Rock and Road Trip are a few of the major competitions. Some of these should definitely be attempted to at least test your climbing ability and also gain some new knowledge of climbing techniques... which is very important to all climbers.
So... there are no hard feelings against competitions but we felt that it’s also of utmost importance to not compete and just get together, end the year with some easy climbing, to bring novice and amateur next to the same fire and just have a good time. Hence the YEF : “Year End Function”.
Anyone who loves climbing qualifies for this event.
This will be an opportunity for climbers from all over the country to meet.... and discuss climbing of course!!
The YEF also aims to introduce our numerous climbing spots to all climbers and develop the crags and safety of climbing in our beautiful country which means that the YEF will be held annually at different places.
No registration or entry fees are charged. This excludes the camping fees or access costs to farmers etc., but a voluntarily R50 (raffle ticket) is payable at the “bolthouse”. This R50 will pay for a complete bolt and hanger / anchor. The payer’s name is then thrown into a hat.
These sponsored bolts will be put into new routes the following day or two. Everyone else can go enjoy some climbing or whatever... After the second day the bolters will each draw a name out of the hat and the owner of the name will then have the privilege to open a new route.
Of course this is a year-end function, so no hard cranking is required. Bear in mind that this outing is to relax after a hard year’s climbing and enjoy some* cold ones around the fire.
2011 YEF is held at Eagle Mountain at Harrismith from 27 December to 1 January.
*........adequate amounts......
