Last year we hiked from Port Edward to Mbotyi and came across this free standing pinnacle called Cathedral Rock about 8km North of Mbotyi.

I noticed a cairn on the pillar just right of the summit. I used binoculars to confirm it.

So who has climbed it? Who climbed it first? Is there a write somewhere in the journals? My dad says it's definitely been climbed before, but he doesn't know the details.

The cairn is just right of the summit. Look at that arch!

The arch is just right of the centre of the picture. Look at that other face.

Hi,

Do not know much about the first ascent etc, but please take caution goin up there, the route seems easy but please do use protection and a rope. I did a rescue there years ago due to a lady soloing up there. Lots of loose rock as well.

Take care

It certainly has been climbed. As long ago as 1983 Andre Delais and a partner climbed it, but I don't think they were the first ones. Andre had a near fatal accident while abseiling down in '83. It would be best to look through the MCSA Journal index to see who did it first.

It was yesterday the 27th of September. Ya same usually we go in the afternoon until its dark and we always assumed that if you parked close to the road people could see it and it would be safe but obviously not.
