Current Situation at Elandskrans, Boven

Postby whitekong » Sun Nov 11, 2012 5:42 pm

Hi guys, I've been out of the country for a few years and was wondering if Elandskrans in Boven has improved or been restored to has it once was under the new ownership. Is it now once again possible to stay there and climb at the surrounding crags safely or is it still a no-go?

Thanks in advance for any reply's! :thumleft:

Elandskrans is sadly not in operation. The resort is standing empty.

I heard people saying that crime has disappeared in the crags surrounding it. Makes sense to me: nobody climbs there anymore. Muggers and robbers are not going to wait in ambush on an abandoned trail.
My prediction is that if people start climbing there regularly the crime will simply pick up again.

IMHO its not safe, except maybe in a very big group.

Maybe the locals (Gus, Jan, etc) has a more accurate opinion...?

Thanks so much for the advise! It's a shame to hear that nothing has changed in all this time. The fear of crime ruining the joy of all those crags! Such a pity... Wouldn't risk it with my girlfriend even if it's remotely unsafe!

Hi there

Unfortunately Elandskrans has closed down and has been stripped down by looters.
There has been issues around the Flying is Fun crag in the last couple of months. Please pop in at Roc 'n Rope before you go climbing anywhere in Sport Valley.

Tranquilitas(www.tranquilitas.com) offers good camping options. The Climber's lodge in town is also very comfortable. For more options please contact us at climb@rocrope.com.

There has been a lot of development in the last couple of years and you won't be left wanting for good climbing!
