Unknown kloof close to Kranskloof, Magalies?

Postby dirktalma » Tue Nov 13, 2012 12:46 am

When I drove back from Tonquani the other day I noticed a very narrow kloof just west of Kranskloof. When you're driving along the N4 back to Pta it's clearly visible. Is this Hidden Kloof? Has anyone gone to have a look? It looks steep, narrow and beautifull. I'll take a photo from the N4 this weekend. The GPS coords are 25°45'21.49"S, 27°42'12.65"E. Here's what it looks like on Google Earth:

Is this the location of Trident? I've never been there as access to Magalies members is sketchy:

how yoda alex has explained it too me before is that hiddenkloof is perpendicular to the klowe, aka parallel to the road and therefore u cannot see it so my best guess is that its not hidden:P however hidden is offlimits, but lets w8 for an old toppie to wake up and hit us with his years of experience. Dicky i think we must get hold of the MCSA map of the klowe for Explo:)

No, that's not it. You got trident right. Go there, it's a nice kloof, lots of interesting routes. What did you magalies okes do to make access tricky for you?

Shorti, apparently it's a long story going back lots of years. I won't explain it here (maybe the owner is reading this. Doubt it.), but I'll mail you.

Next time when you drive back, look at that kloof. Its super narrow and steep.

I'll go with you if you want to go check it out. It's probably best to access it from Kranskloof. Chances are it's on the same property and hopefully we can get permission from the same farmer.

I know the new farmer at Kranskloof. I went there in May this year and got a free night's stay in the B&B when they opened. They bought the place and don't know much about the kloof. They even asked me to find out what happened to their water supply (a pipe was disconnected). Chances are they won't have a problem if its on their property. But the properties in the Magalies is usually long pieces perpendicular to the mountain range, so it might not even be theirs.

I just looked at my 1:50k maps. The two kloofs are on the same farm. It's called Wolhuterskop (452 JQ). Here is a part of the map:

I'll give the new owners a call. How am I supposed to study now?!!!

Otti Neser just told me she first thought it's Hidden Kloof, but now she thinks its called Buddleja. Apparently Hidden can't be seen from the road. Who knew.

I'll check with the owners of Kranskloof and come back to you

Has the MCSA ever tried securing climbing access to Retief's Kloof? It's the one you can see up on the right just before Olifant's Nek. I used to know the Retiefs through mutual friends, and went up there once. The main kloof you can see isn't on the path up to the bumslides that everyone goes to, but off to the right; you have to bundubash to get into it, but it is pretty spectacular with vertical walls good for hard sport and an amazing chockstone / bridge.

I mentioned climbing there to the Retiefs, but the idea wasn't greeted with enthusiasm.

so there are bolts there? Is it hidden Kloof?
I assume u had permission to be in there, careful. I spoke to landowner couple years ago and he was VERY anti climbers, I think it impossible to convince him otherwise.
