Rock Hyrax Urine Offers Clues About Climate Change

Postby Justin » Thu Feb 21, 2013 3:30 pm

Scientists have discovered hyrax urine samples that have been building up for as long as 55,000 years. “Hyraxes use the same place to pee every day,” Brian M. Chase told the Guardian. Chase works at the Centre National de Recherche Scientifique in France and is leading the hyrax project. ”The crucial point is that hyrax urine – which is thick and viscous and dries quickly – contains pollen, bits of leaves, grasses, and gas bubbles that provide a clear picture of the climate at the time.”

As unappealing as it may sound, this picture is extremely useful to scientists. Southern Africa is a sensitive region and knowledge about long-term environmental change there remains scarce. Data collected from these urine samples may fill in some crucial gaps, and help researchers make better predictions about how the area may be affected by climate change in the future.

I can point out a few Magaliesberg chimneys that have been used for millenia. And even now provide shirts containing sample of the stuff. Bloody pisstakers.

mmmm, I believe there's a particularly popular spot on the east side of Mutango lodge / Bobbejaansberg. Thanks for the article, was wondering about that!!

There is also an interesting cascade of Hyraxium under the big rock slab near the top, before u get to the start of Wolfberg cracks. Also, just before that against the ceiling of the overhang some [ MIGGIEPIS ] "Gnat" pee , hanging like stalagtites 3-4 mm long, till some idiot scraped most of it off. I actually saw the " hive " disengage and resettle with an audable humm of wings. [ Question ] how many times must a Midge?/Gnat pee against the roof to grow a stalagmite that long, to eventually be able to hang on it ?
Interesting...

That's right.
The layers are very fine, and evenly laid, and contain a good trapping of atmosphere at the time.

'Muti people' are also fond of them :-(
