Climbing Partner in Lydenburg

Postby BlueSky » Sun Mar 17, 2013 2:47 pm

Hi,
I recently moved to Lydenburg, and am desparate to climb or boulder. I know Boven is close, but if there are any climbers in Lydenburg or the immediate surrounding area, please give me a shout. There's lots of cliffs, so there must be some climbers hiding somewhere close by :) .
Thanks
Rich

Hi

I don't know of any climbers in Lydenberg. Other than Boven I think the closest town with climbers, that I know of, is Middelburg.

Well, it was worth a try. Thanks for the reply Frank. You don't happen to know of any bolted routes or accessible boulders in the direct vicinity of Lydenburg?

No I'm sorry to say but I honestly don't know of any.

What I do in Middelburg on days that I can't go to Boven or Bronkiies is climb the local cliffs on top rope off of natural anchors. I've wrapped brown painted chains around a few boulders with shackles and use them to set up top rope. Maybe you should look into something like that in your area. I also struggle to get climbing partners willing to do long walk-ins just to top rope something that's not graded and often wasp infested. So I end up climbing on my own in the middle of freakin nowhere.

There is (the apparently quite awful) Jim's Crag between Lydenburg and Burgersfort???
I drive from Hoedspruit to Boven quite often and have always wondered what's up the valley called Kranskloof (on the road to Ohrigstad from Lydenburg)??
I'm also sure that something will be found up the Long Tom pass road.

Good luck with the search. Let me know if you find anything worthwhile.

If you trad climb. I've heard there's quite a bit to climb around hoedspruit. Mind my spelling but I think its called manoutsa. Close to the Stryjdom tunnel.

I remember a SAMS article about a good bouldering spot called Goldrush - has to be nearer than Bronkies. Also, contact Tony L. at SA Mountain Sport magazine as I believe that he's actually done climbing in Blyde River Canyon.

Gold rush is between Graskop and Blydepoort Resort, along the Panorama Route.
Plenty of trad at Manoutsa and Blydepoort. All quite well known, but not exactly in and around Lydenburg. Lydenburg is closer to Boven than to any of the above mentioned. We do climb at Manoutsa and Blydepoort during the cooler months, and do occasionally boulder at Goldrush.
