Hi

This year again we all heading to climb granite at Wellingtons Dome on the long weekend 16 June. There are rooms in the house available for those who do not want to camp. Going to be another awesome event. The place has a lot of scope to open steep face and reasonable granite bouldering. The featured photo today (inserted below) is on a climb called Shield of Fire, has 2 grade 26 pitches, 5 in total. The photo is Joerg doing the second 26 pitch, 4th in total. It runs up a diagonal break on a slightly overhanging shield.

Hi Neil, sounds great. What is the "crime" situation at the moment? That is the only reason I have not been back

Hi Nigel

There has not been any incidents for over 2 years now, climbers are going there. However this is an official MCSA meet and would need to look at making a decision here. Got a quote for 4 guards (same as last year meet) which was R4 800.00 for the 3 full days. That is R400 per guard per day which is a good price.
Potential extra cost to climbers:
• 50 climbers R96.00 extra for long weekend
• 40 climbers R120.00
• 30 climbers R160.00

Last year we has about 42 attending, the year before 44 and before that 50. However in 2011 and 2012 and this year as well there was/will be another meet to Hanglip and some climbers may go there. I am deciding if we should go for it again this year.
Points in favour of using them:
• We are obliged to make sure our members and our guests are safe on our organised events.
• A yearly presence of armed guards may have good spin off for other climbers being safe when they come at other non guarded times. Last year and the year before some people came over to see, the guards chased them away. The news would go around that there are armed guards there.
• I would like to support Frans and his small security company, they have given good service in the past.
• The original perpetrators were never caught and may well see people are back.

Points not in favour:
• Now with petrol, accom, toll fees food costs etc all higher, a trip would cost with 4 in a car about R500 per person with security and R380 without.
• The mine has relocated the local residents about 5 km further away.
• There has not been any incident in the past 2 years of so, that I know of, despite climbers have been going back in small numbers.
• Jaap says it is now fine, Amanda says she is not sure.

Some suggestions:
We get security only 2 days (Sat and Sun or Sun and Mon)
We do not charge or charge half for students, others cover difference
We organise some guards from JHB/PTA (friends or family)
We all park in one area and walk to the other arrears – hire only 2 guards.

Can you guys let me know what you think; your input would be great.
