New Roc Rally Rules

How to establish your handicap and scoring

All reference to climbing grades refers to the standard South African grade scale.
The HANDICAP competition at the 'Boven Roc Rally will allow climbers of different experience levels to compete. Your handicap is based on your personal climbing record, which is calculated as follows:

a = your best flash in the last 12 months b = your best redpoint in the last 12 months
c = your best flash in the last 5 years d = your best redpoint in the last 5 years

(a + b + c + d) / 4 = Handicap (simple, eh?)

Example: 24+22+21+19=86 / 4 = 21.5 = Handicap 21 (Yes, round it down, it will make you smile!)

a) Each climber must safely climb a maximum of 10 routes that will count for scoring:
9 routes will count towards your handicapped points. Any route repeated or redpointed will score the base point on the score sheet. Toproped routes will receive the list score minus 2, flashed routes will receive the list score plus 1, and routes that are onsighted will receive the list score plus 2.5.
1 route will count towards your “hardest route” category score – this grade value will be doubled and count towards your total score!
b) Only routes climbed that appear on the official score card will count towards your final score. The route list will be distributed before the competition starts.
c) 1 bonus point per climber will be awarded for each crag where you have climbed a route, with a maximum bonus score of 5 points per climber.
d) Partners in a team do not need to climb the same routes.
e) Both climbers must be present at the briefing at the start of the day, as well as when the score sheet is handed in to the registration desk at the end of the day.
f) Climbers returning to the finish line late will be penalised 1 point for each minute that they are late. Cut-off is at 17h00).

Scoring calculation
Scores will (simply) be calculated as follows:
9 * (Handicap routes as per score sheet) + (value for amount of crags visited) + (value for your hardest toprope/redpoint/flash/onsight) x 2
The team with the highest combined score will 'own' the Roc Rally trophy for the 2013/14 season. Prizes will also be awarded for individual performances and of course for the best dressed team :jocolor:

Camping? We have had this question a couple of times in last days.

Your entry fee for the Boven Roc Rally does not include accommodation. You have to pay for camping, lodging in town or elsewhere separately.

Also, for entry into the event for non-competitors, there will a once-off cover charge (R50) that includes your ticket to the Reel Rock Tour film show - http://reelrocktour.com/events/emgwenya-mp-92013/

Thanks for that! Is there any chance you can post the route list up here, then one can
plan your route stratege. Just any idea.

Redpointing a route same as your handicap scores 7, FL=8, OS=9.5. One grade below your handicap scores 6, one above 8 etc.

There are no fancy bonus points. This does not mean there will not be any surprises...

Please make sure that you bring your own plate, mug and cutlery to the Roc Rally - so that we use less stuff that will just be thrown away.

And a pen or 2 for scoring!
