Sad news indeed - Ulli was such an open-hearted and brilliant guy.

I really enjoyed the time I got to spend with him before/during/after MCSA Cencom meetings. He was always good company, positive and keen to get into the mountains.

Very sad. Will miss his laughter and enthusiasm. He did a great amount of work for the MCSA HH section and the MCSA in general.

Found a couple of pics of Ulli:

Uli seconding up the first pitch of the 20 pitch standard route up Batian (5 199m) on Mt. Kenya. Born in 1940 he was 66 at the time. Not many of his peers were in that league of climbing at such an age (and not many of those climbing shoes around in the crags these days)! His party did not summit this time but did spend the night in a cold bivvy the at the Amphitheater which is probably just under 5 000m (2006)

Ulli (walking behind Paul Fatti) high up (about 4 000m) in the Santa Cruz valley in Peru. If I am not mistaken he did summit Ishinca (5 500m) in the Cordillera Blanca the week after this photo was taken (2004)

It's really sad to have him go, he will be sorely missed. His knowledge of the mountains in the Cape was second to none and his enthusiasm to climb them all one more time was infectious. He gave so much of his time, effort and energy into getting people from all walks of life to feel the same way about mountains that he did.

Ulli D, a legend.

Saturday 17 August at 15h00, have been arranged for a memorial service for Ulli. It will be held in a hall at Somerset College. The College are very willing to help, in recognition of the Ulli and his tireless efforts every year with the Somerset Trek.

This is sad and I'm sorry I can't be there on Saturday. I'm sure there's a place where Ulli and Dave Davies and so many others are hanging out and having a ball and the thought of that puts the smile back on one's face.

Its been a bad week for the mountains. Jim Thomson (who did the FA of the Outer Mashai Fang and Rhino S route) passed away on Saturday last weekend, Hilton College had 2 serious incidents this week with one grade 9 learner being airlifted out and subsequently loosing his arm below the elbow after an incident on Tseketseke Pass, followed by another grade 9 learner passing away this morning after having a seizure in the Southern Drakensberg.

My condolences to all the families who have been affected by these events :(
