Turret Peak (Wydekloof)

Post by ShaolinWood » Wed Apr 12, 2017 7:22 am

Hi all, I'm heading out to explore Wydekloof a bit. Got the permits and basic access info from CT MCSA already but I'm trying to figure out where on the map Turret Peak actually is :P
Have never been there.
I'm guessing it's the peak up into Donkerkloof? (See image below)
Also is that the parking spot through Donkerbos?
Does anyone know if there's water up there at the moment? Hoping the little bit of rain today will reach there :)

Would appreciate any info/help!!

Thanks and regards
Gerhard

Awesome work Nic!

@ShaolinWood: Note, It looks like the route on Nic's map ends at the Chopping Block.
The Turret is actually the next block a bit further down on the map.

There is more info in the very much in progress route guide here: http://www.climbing.co.za/wiki/Turret_Peak_(Wydekloof).

I will add a map through the farm etc for next update after Easter

Access through Donkerbos is at their discretion.

- In addition to getting the permit from the MCSA, you must contact the farm manager on duty.
- Make sure you drive slowly (dust is bad for the crops).
- Only park at the designated MCSA spot under the tree near sign in book.
- absolutely do NOT drive on any of the roads/jeep tracks on the hillside. If you want to go via the waterfall, you must walk from the designated parking.
- Obviously take all of your litter and toilet paper out with you.
One life, one body. Use them well.

Whoops. That's what I get for doing it pre-coffee. Fixed it
Happy climbing

Walking up Wydekloof is a must if you have never been there. It is truly beautiful. The way marked on the map is not quite correct. You walk up the river until you reach plateau. Once you cross a quad bike track angle up the left away from the stream and gain height to turn sharp left into a gorge after about a 40 min walk. You can also follow the river but the terrain is more rugged. Follow this to the top onto the plateau and you will find the turret higher and to the right.

Ya nee the map I drew, if that's the one you are referring to Snort, was drawn in haste and pre-coffee. Take with a pinch of salt
Happy climbing

Thanks for all the info everyone. We ended up waling pretty much like you said Snort (Used your trail as an indication Nic) There's no real trail, you just battle up the scree slope and avoid cliffs :D but the reward at the top is well worth it.

We tried coming down on the other side to use the kloof as an exit route but had to turn back because we encountered a massive waterfall/impassible drop. If I had a rope it would have been fine but we had to walk back and try walking over the next mountain for yet another scree slope down towards the dam.

Will definitely go back to climb some of those rocks. There's such an abundance of quality rock up there!!!!
