finger, hand and wrist pain

Post by klimkop » Sat Nov 04, 2017 12:22 pm

Ive stopped climbing more than a year ago due to finger, hand and wrist pains. I started climbing about 15 years ago. At some point I've probably overexerted my hands from climbing harder grades and not warming up thoroughly. Even after a year of no climbing my wrists are still sensitive when picking up heavy stuff. Pins and needles in the hands now and then. What guru do I speak to? Anybody who've experienced the same problem. Any success stories and advice for recovery or treatment. I'm experiencing a hole in my soul from no more climbing.

sounds like carpal tunnel syndrome. common among older people & keyboard slaves.
hope you can sort it out with non-invasive treatment; otherwise a small operation might do the trick.

i suggest you go see a physio first up - any competent physio will know about carpal tunnel and can assess what the best course of action will be (probably try physio first; if no real improvement surgery might be the next stop).

i also suggest you don't wait until january 2018; go see someone asap.

Sounds like what I had for about two years, basically carpal tunnel syndrome.

I went to the Wrist specialist (Orthopedic surgeon) at Vincent Pallotti (Dr de Jager) and he told me unless you are earning your living through using your wrists he would advise against surgery. I found strapping my wrists helped and taking up trad climbing, think longer easier routes.

Sorry for your fustration, hope things get better.

Also if you use a computer a lot, get an ergonomic keyboard, learn to touch type and use the mouse with your good wrist.

i'm also having finger, hand and wrist pain and that's on a daily basis, especially upon waking up. i've been recommended to try fish oil capsules. i started taking them daily and although the pain is still there, it is much less frustrating (because in the past the pain was to a point that i could barely move my hands/ fingers/ wrists and now i do just fine). but truth is that i'm also taking some medications as well (but i doubt they helped since they shouldn't have anything to do with pains as i take them for other conditions).

I've had arm/wrist pain before as well.

Never had it professionally looked at. To treat it I looked at what I was repeating.
- The first time: I was working at a climbing wall and putting on many harnesses during the day (at high speed). I slowed down and changed the way I put the harnesses on people.
- 2nd time: I changed the hand with which I operated the mouse (I used my left hand to operate the mouse instead of the right).
- 3rd time: I started using a mouse instead of my touch pad and got an external keyboard.

Point being: If there is anything that you are doing repetitively, stop doing it or change the way you are doing it.

Further point to prove - go throw a ball with your less strong hand (and you'll get my point 8)

Forget about climbing for a while.

If i can't climb for some reason, I keep the momentum going by doing something else positive

So I made contact with guy, reference from Xana, Done 3rd therapy session today. Did 1 session once a week for 3 weeks now. Can already feel an improvement.Pretty cool guy with a holistic outlook. Going to ease back into climbing on a gentle scale with a different approach. Simple adjustments in my daily going about and way of doing things will be tweaked here and there. Even small adjustments makes a difference. Just by raising your computer screen and lifting your chair, 15min walks after work, simple stuff. My enthusiasm to just go into the climb like a rocket with short fuse was part of the culprit too. There is rock at the end of the tunnel...
